The future of interoperable Earth system data infrastructures

The rapid emergence of AI, large-scale Digital Twins such as Destination Earth, European AI Factories, and a new generation of Earth observation systems is transforming Earth system science. Unlocking their full potential requires seamless access to high-quality, FAIR, and interoperable environmental data across disciplines, research infrastructures, and national initiatives. While Europe has made major investments in research infrastructures and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), the next challenge is to connect these complementary ecosystems into a coherent, sustainable, and AI-ready European data landscape. In this context, the Memorandum of Understanding between Data Terra and NFDI4Earth, the French and German national initiatives for research data management in Earth system sciences, represents an important step towards embedding national activities into EOSC and strengthening the EOSC Federation through interoperable services and long-term collaboration.

The workshop will bring together scientists, research infrastructure operators, policymakers, and representatives of national and European initiatives to explore how interoperable data infrastructures can accelerate scientific discovery, support trustworthy AI, and advance European digital research infrastructures. Through keynote presentations, demonstrations, and strategic discussions, participants will examine opportunities for closer collaboration, culminating in the signing of the Data Terra–NFDI4Earth Memorandum of Understanding, which will launch a long-term partnership to jointly develop interoperable services and strengthen the European Earth and environmental data ecosystem.
